The sixth & final round of the Irish 1:8 Off Road National Championships took place at the all astro turf surface Navan Nitro Nuts over the weekend where outgoing Truggy Champion Bradley Baird ended his debut season in Buggy with his first National race victory in the class. Having TQ’d the event the teenager suffered a flame out on the start line leaving him last but a superb recovery saw the Associated driver battle his way back up through the field. Setting the fastest lap of the race he finally took the lead when the Xray of Barkley Abernethy suffered an engine cut during the penultimate round of fuel stops to win by 2/3rd of a lap. Also driving an Xray, Alan Scroggie completed the podium bringing to a close another successful season of 1:8 Buggy racing in Ireland which saw Losi driver Michael Todd successfully defend his title.

In the Truggy class the title was still to be decided at the season finale between Neil Irwin and Arron Vance. 15-year-old Vance held the advantage in qualifying as he secured TQ honours with his Losi from the Xray of Irwin. In the half hour final, Vance’s chance at the title ended on lap 11 when he was forced to retire leaving Irwin to take the win and the 2010 title. The big battle of the race was the three way battle for second between Oisin O’Briain, Rodger Skelly and Steven McClements. In the end O’Briain took the place from Skelly with the trio all finishing on the same lap.

The successor to the double World Champion 416, the new car is more about fine tuning a winning package than huge changes. With the use of LiPo and brushless motors now used exclusively, the changes include a new super rigid motor mount with an updated motor position. Other changes include a new internal ratio, new chassis layout, battery mounting, an updated ball diff design and updated steering system. Expect to get the official word from Tamiya in and around the middle of October.

The second round of the 2010 Irish Touring Car Series was held at the fast St.Annes track in Dublin over the weekend where defending Champion & Round 1 winner Alan Bickerstaff claimed yet another victory. Qualifying saw the Associated team driver secure TQ honours ahead of the Tamiya’s of Mark Gilliland and Keith Dempsey with Graham Kenny fourth fastest at the controls of his Schumacher. In the finals it was the Top 3 qualifiers who were to be the class of the field. In the opening leg it was Dempsey who took the win after Bickerstaff and Gilliland made contact as the trio ran bumper to bumper in what was one of the closest races ever witnessed at the St.Annes track. Half way through the second Leg Dempsey looked on target to take his first overall victory but a small error allowed Gilliland through to claim the win from Bickerstaff. Leg 3 was a much easier affair for Bickerstaff, the win securing him overall victory after Gilliland and Dempsey clashed in the later part of the race while battling over second allowing Kenny through for his best finish of the three legs. Overall the result was a repeat of the opening round in Bangor earlier in the year with Gilliland the runner up and Dempsey filling the final podium placing.

My next car is nearly here…

Having got the World Exclusive on the new TC6 at the World Championships in Burgdorf, Team Associated have released full details on their new electric touring car chassis. Designed to take full advantage of all the latest technological advances made in 1:10 scale electronics, the TC6 has been optimized to use all of the benefits offered by brushless motor systems and LiPo batteries. The engineers behind the doors of Area 51 have been hard at work developing the TC6 to blend the best qualities of high performance and adjustability without sacrificing durability or ease of maintenance.

The TC6 takes the same suspension components from the TC5R before it and adds many new features, making it even better. For improved weight distribution, the TC6 motor mount has been moved 13mm closer to the chassis center line and the spur gear has been lowered 5mm compared to the TC5. These changes result in a more centralized mass and lower center of gravity for the TC6 chassis. The servo mounting holes are slotted to not only accommodate different servos but also to optimize the position of the servo mass.

The TC6 includes the Factory Team VCS3 shock package that features hard-anodized threaded shock bodies with bottom-loaded seals. The VCS3 shocks are super smooth and have an increased stroke for more up-travel at the wheels, all adding up to more consistent overall traction.

An updated steering system with additional Ackermann options and an improved steering input rate gives the TC6 more consistent handling. Blue titanium turnbuckles come with new ball cup eyelets for easier access to the ball studs.

Team Associated are celebrating the first major victory for their new TC6 touring car after team driver Olly Jefferies took TQ and a win at round four of the BRCA national series at the fast Halifax track. In the super touring class it was Elliott Harper that set the early pace with his Tamiya but it was Olly Jefferies that came through to take TQ ahead of Chris Grainger’s Schumacher Mi4 with Elliott lining up third. Andy Moore struggled a little in qualifying and ended up fourth but was hoping for a good result over the three leg finals.

Olly took legs one and two of the super touring A final with his LRP powered Associated with Grainger taking the final leg. Overall Grainger finished second ahead of Elliott, Andy Moore’s domestic bad luck continued and he finished down the order, Chris Ashton and Johnny Aird completed the top five.

In the Pro Stock class it was a win for Pro Stock reigning champion Johnny Bowden, X-Ray driver and pole man Andy Murray struggled to match the Hot Bodies driver in the finals and had to settle for second ahead of the Associated TC5 of young star Zak Smith. The series now moves on to West London next month were the championship will be decided.
